Luca Frei was born in 1976 in Lugano, Switzerland.
Luca Frei studied at the Centro Scolastico Industrie Artistiche, Lugano, from 1992 to 1997. Three years later, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors from Edinburgh College of Art.
In 1999, Frei travelled to the United States where he pursued his education at the Yale University School of Art till 2000 when he entered Malmö Art Academy. Frei obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree two years later.
Luca Frei has presented his artworks, installations, and interactive performances all around the world, including such art venues as Barbara Wien gallery, Berlin, the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the City Art Centre, Edinburgh, and Moderna Museet, Stockholm among others. The artist has also taken part in several biennials, such as the Cairo Biennial, the Prague Biennial, and the Istanbul Biennial.
Nowadays, Luca Frei lives and works in Malmö, Sweden. He serves as an associate professor of Basic Studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark.
Luca Frei is an accomplished artist whose interactive installations that explore the influence of the architecture on human beings and vice versa are recognized by the art community and art lovers.
Frei has been the recipient of such fellowships as Konstnärsnämnden Arbetstipendium, Hänels Donationsfond, Malmö Art Academy, IASPIS Ateljestipendium, Konstnärsnämnden Arbetstipendium, Edstrandska Stiftelsens Stipendium, Konstnärsnämnden Arbetstipendium, and Ellen Trotzig Stipendiet. In 2009 and 2010 he obtained Swiss Art Awards.
