Lucien Stark was born on March 4, 1929, in Winterset, Iowa, United States. He was the son of Robert W. and Naomi (Simpson) Stark.
Stark graduated from Drake University in 1950, and the next year, he obtained his Master of Music degree from it. He also attended Juilliard School of Music from 1955 till 1957 and received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 1961.
Stark started his career as a professor and chair of the piano department at George Peabody College in 1961. He worked there for 15 years and then went to the University of Kentucky, where he held the same position till his retirement in 1994.
Stark also served in the U.S. Army from 1951 till 1953.
