Lyle Bongé studied at Black Mountain College, Asheville, North Carolina, in 1947-1948. He also attended the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg (1951), Tulane University, New Orleans (1951-52), and Mexico City College (1952).
Lyle Bongé was a teacher at the New School for Social Research in New York City and was on the board of directors of Peoples Bank in Biloxi. In 1968 he broke the world's record for singlehanded cross-gulf passages under sail.
