Manuel Costa earned his Master of Arts in religious education from the Catholic University of America in 1968. He then received his Master of Arts in counseling psychology from Santa Clara University in 1977.
Manuel Costa was a Roman Catholic priest during 1961-1975. Later he became pastor of a Roman Catholic parish in Eureka, California in 1968-1974.
Costa also was an assistant professor of religious studies and director of campus ministry from 1974 to 1975. From 1975 to 1979 he was an executive director at the Bridge Counseling Center in Morgan Hill, California and from 1979 to 1988 at the Miramonte Mental Health Services in Palo Alto, California.
In 1989 he began working as a psychotherapist in private practice.
