Mari Takabayashi was born on November 20, 1960 in Tokyo, Japan. She is a daughter of Yoshimitsu and Emiko Takabayashi.
Mari Takabayashi attended Otsama Women's College in Japan.
In 1990 Mari Takabayashi moved to New York and started to work for American publishers. Her illustrations, often executed in pastel watercolors, are praised for imparting energy and depth to the simple, rhyming texts they accompany. Among the author/illustrator's books for English-language readers are I Live in Brooklyn and I Live in Tokyo.
In Rush Hour, written by Christine Loomis, Takabayashi depicts the varied activities of the masses as they commute to work via car, bus, train, or airplane. For Flannel Kisses, a picture book written by Linda Crotta Brennan, Takabayashi contributed a series of nostalgia-imbued illustrations celebrating the kind of fun that may be had on a snowy day. In addition to her picture book projects, she is also a textile designer.
