(With a vast understanding of human nature, Thurm writes f...)
With a vast understanding of human nature, Thurm writes from the point of view of a rabbi whose wife has announced to the congregation that she is leaving him; a gay man facing his best friend's wedding; an adolescent girl riding around with her taxi-driver mother; and a young woman teaching in a rough, inner-city school. Hard-bitten, contemporary dialogue, and an uncanny choice of emotional and atmospheric detail will most certainly rank Thurm among the best contemporary practitioners of the short story and have resonance within a broad spectrum of readership.

(Set in the private school world of Manhattan's Upper East...)
Set in the private school world of Manhattan's Upper East Side, Posh tracks the lives of a group of teenagers and the adults who hope to control them. It’s a world of over-the-top entitlement and tribal customs, a world of surface interactions and deep needs - a world of private schools and privilege. Griffin is a preparatory school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side with the best students - and the richest parent body - the city has to offer. In this eloquent novel set during one class’s senior year at the Griffin School, among the queen bees and the wannabes, Michael Avery and Julianne Coopersmith begin a relationship. Their backgrounds are so different - he’s beyond privileged and rich, her mother is a writer who drives a cab - but it’s the rich boy who ends up being the needy one, with an emotional hole they both believe only Julianne can fill. Their parents are not immune from internal torture either - Michael’s mother finds it easier to love her Chinese Crested Hairless than her own child, and Julianne’s mother’s protective instincts have unexpected consequences.

When New York City native Desirée Christian-Cohen flees her sometime-boyfriend, unhappy mother, Nina (who's recently learned her soon-to-be ex-husband Patrick is gay), and failing grandfather, she picks the flight plan by randomly dropping her finger on a map and hitting: Honey Creek, Kansas, population 1,623. And if being a "tourist" in Honey Creek weren't noticeable enough, try hanging out in the Sweet Tooth luncheonette, where you're referred to as "half a Jew."

With her fourth collection, acclaimed short story writer Marian Thurm brings her darkly comic sense of humor to a memorable set of new characters - every one of whom is brought to vivid life under her sharply observant but always compassionate gaze. A divorcée is hit on by her philandering ex whose new wife is stricken with cancer. An untimely shattered knee complicates a man’s decision to dump his fiancée. A grieving widow is burdened by her daughter’s relationship troubles. A teenaged cancer survivor convinces her friends to go on a quest in search of her older crush. A Jewish man is shocked by his Catholic girlfriend’s reaction to visiting Auschwitz. In this powerful new book from an esteemed novelist and acclaimed short story writer, Marian Thurm expertly draws a chilling portrait of a marriage and the downward spiral of a loving husband and father who has bought a handgun as the novel opens. Stacy and Roger seem to have it all: a wonderful marriage, a luxury Upper East Side apartment with all the accoutrements of the wealthy, and two endearing young children enrolled in private schools. But what appears to be "the good life" to their family and friends is not what it seems in this fast-paced, suspenseful novel that shows the sinister effects of a destructive marriage and the pursuit of the privileged life. Thurm, who according to the New York Times Book Review, "writes brilliantly of the battle of the sexes," has done so again in The Good Life.

Marian Thurm was born on April 14, 1952.
Marian Thurm studied at Oceanside High School. In 1975 she received a Master of Arts degree from Brown University.
When Marian Thurm’s first literary work, Floating, was published in 1984, she presented the issues that would define her later novels. Throughout her writing career, the themes that have tied her works together are those of human love and discord, particularly among family members.
Thurm’s first novel, Walking Distance, looks at infidelity and death, set against seemingly trivial circumstances. Her collection of short stories, These Things Happen, focuses on the darker side of human encounters and features not only marital strife, but deception, robbery, and lover’s quarrels. The Clairvoyant (1997) concerns the life of psychic Victor Mackenzie and his love for artist Katha Randall.
Thurm has taught creative writing at Columbia University in New York City and at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Thurm has also written two novels published under the pseudonym Lucy Jackson, Posh (2007) and Slicker (2010).
