In 1965, Kozak graduated from Marygrove College with a Bachelor of Science degree. She received a Master of Arts degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1967. Also in 1972, Marilyn received a Doctor of Philosophy from the same university.
Kozak began her career as an Assistant Professor of cell biology at School Medicine of New York University and held the position from 1978 to 1979. In 1979 she took a position of a Professor of biological science at Pittsburgh University and held it for 10 years.
Since 1990, Marilyn became a Professor of biochemistry department at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, United States. Since 2008, she has been a Professor emeritus there.
Kozak is known for her research in Cell Biology. She is also involved in research that concerns mRNA and eukaryotes.
