Marilyn attended Culver-Stockton College and Northwestern University. After that she received Bachelor of Science in 1972 and her doctoral degree in 1980 from the University of Minnesota.
During 1974 - 1980 Marilyn had a private practice in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. After that she became a co-owner of Family Therapy Institute in 1980 - 1990. Since 1985 Marilyn served as a clinical associate professor at the University of Minnesota, and since 1990 she was a president of Mason and Associates and Journeys Inward. At that period she was also appointed a training director of Rapid Change Technologies.
Marilyn has served on many boards including The Voyageur Outward Bound School, The Hazelden Foundation, and The Tibetan American Foundation. Marilyn was the founding Chair of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum's Woman of Distinction Committee and was past President of the International Women's Forum, New Mexico. She also served on the Board of Rancho la Puerta and was Board President of KSFR Radio of Santa Fe.
Merilyn admitted that writing is powerfully therapeutic. Her work was influenced by ongoing narratives about people’s lives — their encounters with struggle and pain. For her, the research and reading hold the intrigue.

In 1955 Marilyn married Richard Donald Stelli, but they divorced in 1974. They had two common children: Jerrod Stelli and Jeanine Stelli Esparolini. She also had a daughter-in-law, Lorrie Warner, and grandchildren, Morgan Stelli and Nicolas Esparolini.
