From 1974 to 1976 Klett was a geologist and geologist field assistant for the U.S. Geological Survey, Branch of Energy Resources. For the Rephotographic Survey Project, he has been photographing sites of nineteenth-century western landscapes.
Klett won an Emerging Artist Fellowship from the NEA in 1979.
