In three years Klett became a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the Visual Studies Workshop, in Rochester, New York, the United States.
Since 1977 Mark was a chief photographer on the Rephotographic Survey Project, sponsored by the Colorado Mountain College and Sun Valley Center for the Arts and Humanities. In a year he became an assistant director of photography at Sun Valley Center for the Arts and Humanities, Idaho.
From 1974 to 1976 Klett was a geologist and geologist field assistant for the U.S. Geological Survey, Branch of Energy Resources. For the Rephotographic Survey Project, he has been photographing sites of nineteenth-century western landscapes.
Klett won an Emerging Artist Fellowship from the NEA in 1979.
