Masao Tsukada was born on the August 2, 1914, in Bunkyō-ku, Tokyo, Japan.
After finishing elementary school, he became the pupil of Chotaro Hanada, eighth grade shogi player.
By the time he was 14, in 1928, Tsukada attained the first dan and held the eighth dan when only 26. By defeating the reigning champion, Yoshi Kimura, in 1947, with a score of 4-2 he took his place. In 1948, defended the champion title against Oyama Yasuharu, only to lose it to Kimura in 1949. Tsukada was a clever strategist and depended on attack for success. Attained the ninth dan in 1954. From 1974 till the year of his death, was the president of the Japan Shogi Federation.
Masao Tsukada has written several books on shogi, of which "Introduction to Shogi" was the most popular.
