Matataro Matsumoto was born on November 3, 1865 in Japan.
After graduating from Tokyo University in 1893 he continued his studies first at Yale University, U.S.A., and then at Leipzig University, Germany.
Upon returning home was appointed professor at Tokyo Higher Normal School, then at Kyoto University before he rejoined his alma mater in same capacity. He was the first to introduce experimental methods for psychological research into Japan. Later was chief editor of Psycho Magazine and rendered great services to the study of psychology. He was also an art critic after his own style.
