Mathias Balogh Freese was born on July 23, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He is the son of Herbert F. Freese, a salesman, and Yocheved (Altschuler) Freese.
Freese received his bachelor's degree from Queens College of the City University of New York in 1962, as well as his master's degree four years later. Then he became a Master of Social Work at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1978.
Freese began to work as a junior high school teacher in Jamaica, New York for a year from 1962. He was then a high school teacher in Elmont, New York from 1963 till 1969, as well as in Hauppauge, New York for two years from 1972.
Freese joined the Half Hollow Hills High School East at Dix Hills, holding the position of a teacher and administrator of alternative high school for more than twenty years from 1974. Simultaneously, he was a clinical social worker at Middle Country Center for Psychotherapy, for three years from 1979. Freese also served as a clinical social worker and senior therapist at Center for Counseling Services from 1987. Additionally, he was a curriculum writer at the Board of Cooperative Educational Services at Jericho, New York during the period of time 1969-1972.
Freese's writings, which emphasize creativity, spiritual wisdom, self-awareness, transcendence and meaning, are listed in Who’s Who in America, 56th Edition, Who’s Who Among American Teachers, A Directory of American Poets and Fiction Writers, and the International Authors Who’s Who. His short fiction has appeared in Jewish Currents, Pig Iron Press and Skywriters, among other magazines, while the nonfiction articles have appeared in the New York Times, Voices: The Art and Science of Psychotherapy and Publishers Marketing Association Newsletter.
Freese is the author of a novella titled The i Tetralogy, and of the next three volumes, I Am Gunther, Gunther’s Lament and Gunther Redux. He also published a collection of short stories titled In January Down to a Sunless Sea.
In 1987 Freese received the Award from John Warkentin Essay Contest for his writings. In 2005, the Society of Southwestern Authors honored Freese with a first-place award for personal/essay memoir. His novella The i Tetralogy was awarded the Allbooks Reviews Editor’s Choice Award for best historical fiction of 2007.
