Matteo Boiardo spent much of his life serving the Este family, the rulers of Ferrara, Reggio, Modena, and other territories. He was one of the party that went to Naples for Eleanora of Aragon, the bride of Duke Ercole d'Este and later served successively as governor of Modena and of Reggio. By virtue of his position, Boiardo wrote much of his Latin poetry in praise of the Este family.
