He studied for a Doctor of Philosophy at Columbia University in New York, winning his doctorate in 1952, after which he became a lecturer in education at the University of Queensland. He was elected to the Australian Senate in 1961 as a Labor Senator for Queensland, taking his seat in July 1962. However, less than three months later, he died, necessitating the appointment of George Whiteside to fill the vacancy.
