Worked as a telegraph operator at the Moscow-Kursk (1912-1916) and Perm (1918-1921) railways. Since 1921 he was involved in party work, up until 1926, the year which marks the beginning of Maxim's literary career. From 1928 to 1932, he served as executive secretary of the Board of the Association of Proletarian Writers of the Central Black Earth Region. He was executive editor of the magazine "Pod'yem" (1931-1935, 1957-1958), the almanac "Literary Voronezh" (1936-1941, 1954-1956). Served as director of the regional book publisher from 1941 to 1942 and from 1950 to 1953, he was head of the Voronezh division of the USSR Writers' Union .
