Maxime Lalanne was born on November 27, 1827 in Bordeaux, France. He was the son of Anne Cecile Gellibert and Antoine Lalanne, a clerk of the first chamber of the Court of Appeals.
Initially, Maxime Lalanne was educated at l'institution Oré, where he studied under Jules Saulnier. He received his Bachelor of Letters degree in 1848. Four years later, in 1852, Maxime moved to Paris, where he attended the studio of Jean François Gigoux.
In 1850, Maxime exhibited six drawings (pencils and pastels) at the eighth Exposition of the Philomathique Society in the Palais de Justice. Despite the fact, that the artist lived and worked in Paris, he continued to exhibit his works in Bordeaux.
In 1852, the artist made his appearance at the Salon in Paris with two charcoal drawings, which he continued to submit throughout his career. During that time, charcoal was very popular for both its novelty and expressiveness.
Lalanne began etching for Alfred Cadart in 1862 as one of the founding members of Cadart's 160-member Société des Aquafortistes (formed in September 1862), and his work was among the first published and distributed by the Société. The following year, in 1863, Lalanne made his etching debut at the Salon, submitting three street scenes.
During the period from 1862 to 1881, Maxime produced over 145 etchings, and the Cadart house issued over 80 of them in numerous Cadart publications.
Between 1882 and 1884, Maxime exhibited his works in Britain at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts.
In 1885, Lalanne settled down in Nogent-sur-Marne. He continued working until he died on July 29, 1886, with charcoal in his hand.
Maxime Lalanne gained prominence as the foremost contributor to the etching revival in France during the period of the mid-to-late 1800s. He was also the founding member of Société des Aquafortistes in 1862.
The artist attained Military Order of Christ and in 1875 was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour.
