Bateson began her career as a postdoctoral research assistant to a professor at Oxford University in 1993 and held the position for two years. Then in 1998, she became a Royal Society University Research Fellow of the Department of Psychology at Newcastle University. Also Melissa served as a lecturer at the School of Biology and Psychology at Newcastle University from 2007 to 2009. In 2009, she was appointed a reader in ethology at the Institute of Neuroscience at Newcastle University. Since 2012 Bateson has been a professor of ethology at that institute.
Bateson is a member of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour, International Society for Comparative Cognition and Universities Federation for Animal Welfare.
