The classification system presented in this volume is based largely on Dewey's magnum opus Decimal System (1876) and Ockerbloom's excellent Free Decimal Correspondence (2010). It has been slightly updated for improved benefit to librarians. It shortens subject headings, provides a more intuitive sequence of topics, and reduces the number of classes to ninefreeing up the tenth class for any purpose of the librarian's choosing. It retains Dewey's classic preface and card catalog appendix, removes the outdated index, retains most of Ockerbloom's scope and nomenclature, and adds guidance for digital collections.

Dewey was born on 10 December in 1851, in Adams Center, New York.
Melvil attended rural schools and determined early that his destiny was to reform education of the masses. He briefly attended Alfred University (1870), then Amherst College, where he belonged to Delta Kappa Epsilon, and from which he earned a bachelor's degree in 1874 and a master's in 1877.
In 1883 Melvil became librarian of ColumbiaCollege, and in the following year founded there the School of Library Economy, the first institution for the instruction of librarians ever organized.
His " Decimal System of Classification " for library cataloging, first proposed in 1876, is extensively used.
It was first published in 1876 and is the most widely used system in the world. Dewey's early adult years were devoted largely to three causes: the classification system, metric reform, and spelling reform.
Some forty years later, after evidence of remarkable success in training librarians for service in all parts of the world, the school finally returned as a unit of Columbia University in 1926.
