Michael Cook received a Bachelor of Arts from Gonzaga University in 1959. In a year he got a Master of Arts at the same university.
In 1967 Michael became a Master of Sacred Theology, Santa Clara University. In the same year, he became a Licentiate of Sacred Theology at Alma College.
From 1968 to 1969 Cook studied at Pontifical Biblical Institute and from 1969 to 1971 he attended Pontifical Gregorian University. In 1974 he earned a Doctor of Theology degree from Graduate Theological Union.
Michael Cook began his career as a high school teacher and basketball coach at Jesuit High School, Portland, in 1960. In 1974 he started working as an assistant professor of systematic theology at Jesuit School of Theology/Graduate Theological Union, becoming an acting dean of Jesuit School of Theology in 1979 and an associate professor in 1982.
From 1982 to 1986 and from 1989 to 1995 Michael served at Gonzaga University, as an associate professor of religious studies. In 1995 he was appointed as a professor, and in 1996 he became a chair of Religious Studies Department.
Cook also was a visiting lecturer at Holy Family Sisters of San Jose, an adjunct lecturer at Jesuit School of Theology and visiting associate professor.
In 1974 Michael worked as visiting assistant professor at Seattle University and from 1987 to 1988 he served as a visiting professor of dogmatic theology at La Pontificia Universidad Católica de Santiago, Chile
Cook was a summer school instructor at numerous institutions, a contributor to books, including the series "Laborers in His Harvest," and The Harper-Collins Encyclopedia of Catholicism, a contributor of articles and reviews to periodicals, including Theological Studies, Chicago Studies, Studies in the Spirituality of the Jesuits, America, Horizons, and Praying. He was also involved in numerous lectures, workshops, and retreats.
