This beautiful book contains a photographic record of the work of Walter Spies, a German artist, and Beryl de Zoete, a British writer and dance critic, co-authors of the classic Dance and Drama in Bali (1938). These photographs, many previously unpublished, are chosen from the Horniman Museum Library collection to vividly evoke rural life in Bali, with its dance-drama traditions, and challenge the more lurid aspects of Bali's image in the 1930s.

This book examines the ways in which certain national politicians, ethnic groups, and local communities in the Malay-Indonesian world express their ethnicity - and how their ethnicity is portrayed and identified by others, whether they be near (fellow citizens and the like) or far (Europeans, for instance). A full range of images relevant to Malay-Indonesian selfhood is presented, from symbols of national identity to those at the regional and local levels.

(Race and ethnicity continue to be important, if unwelcome...)
Race and ethnicity continue to be important, if unwelcome, factors in modern politics. This is evident in East Africa: the ethnic factor is often dominant in multi-party elections, while in Rwanda and Burundi bloodshed and genocidal attacks have been linked to ethnic difference. This book examines the phenomena of race and ethnicity in general, but with particular reference to Africa, especially the East. The impact of non-indigenous groups is considered, together with ethnic differences between Africans. The relevance of tourism and religion is also examined.

(The word ’batik’ is possibly of Malay origin from the wor...)
The word ’batik’ is possibly of Malay origin from the word ’tik’ meaning ’to drip’ or ’to drop.’ The term is applied to a resist dye technique invented independently in locations as diverse as Ancient Egypt, Japan, and Turkestan. Batik is a remarkably flexible textile technique and is suited to small-scale methods of production, but demand from the fashion and tourism industries is increasing. This volume brings together the experiences and concerns of the international community of batik producers. It gives voice to their suggestions for ensuring that the producers of this traditional craft are integrated into its increasingly global production rather than excluded from it.
