After receiving a seven-year education (1948), Mikhail Medvedev was educated at the Biisk Feldsher and Obstetric School. After graduating with honors and qualification as a medical assistant, in 1952 he entered the medical faculty of the Tomsk Medical Institute (TMI). He showed interest in surgery and was an active member of the student scientific club - first at the Department of Faculty Surgery (head - Professor B.A. Albitsky), and from the 4th year at the Department of Hospital Surgery (head - academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, Savinykh). He was the winner of the Republican contest of scientific student works (1957), secretary of the Komsomol Bureau, chairman of the TMI Sports Club. Was appointed to the Lenin scholarship. After graduating with honors from the Institute in the specialty "medical business" (1958), M. Medvedev - postgraduate student of the Department of Normal Physiology of the Tomsk Medical Institute.
Since 1962 he worked as an assistant to the Department of Normal Physiology of the Khabarovsk Medical Institute, since 1964 - Associate Professor, since 1973 - Professor, since 1975 - Head of the Department of Normal Physiology, TMI. From 1968 to 1970 - Dean of Pediatric Faculty, from 1970 to 1974 - Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of TMI, from 1974 to 1997 - Rector of TMI (since 1993 - SSMU). From 1976 to the present, M.A. Medvedev - the head of the department of normal physiology. In 1962 M.A. Medvedev defended his thesis "The role of the pituitary gland in the regulation of bile excretory function of the liver" for the degree of candidate of medical sciences. In 1971 in the council of the Novosibirsk Medical Institute - the doctoral thesis "Mechanisms of action of certain hormones on the stomach motor function according to electrographic analysis."
Creator of the Tomsk scientific school of physiology and biophysics of smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract. He took an active part in the creation of the Tomsk Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. During his rector's time, 3 new faculties were opened: medical-biological, post-diploma training and higher nursing education; a kindergarten, a sports and health complex, a business building, and a clinical building were built. In 1980 he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, and in 1993 - a full member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
