Mikhail Veniaminovich Portugalov graduated from the verbal department of Moscow University in 1906.
In the years 1907-1912 Mikhail Veniaminovich taught in the gymnasiums of Moscow, Rostov-on-Don. He was one of the organizers of the Oryol Regional Society.
The work about Alexey Vasilyevich Koltsov "The Poetry of Love and Bitter Share" was published in Rostov-on-Don in 1907. By order of V.Ya. Bryusov he created the Oryol Museum-Library of I.S. Turgenev, where he was the first director (since 1918). In 1922 he was elected as a teacher of Russian and Western European literature of the Voronezh State University, where he lectured on a run from 1923-1924.
