SUMMARY The rebirth of competition and the extensive "exit" that has resulted are among the most important developments in Central Europe since the demise of Communism. This text examines why, how, and to what extent enterprises have reduced their size or left the market altogether during the first years of the transition from socialism to capitalism in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.

This book explores the disastrous economic consequences of pseudo lending for pseudo reforms that occurred when the IMF, as a representative of the West, pretended to aid the transition economy of post-communist Russia through stabilization while the Russian government promised reforms.

Downloadable! This paper argues that the IMF financial and good technical assistance to Russia in the 1990s has been less than generous. Not only the size of the assistance might have not been adequate but also the timing and actual disbursements of these funds were in sharp discord with pledges. More importantly, the IMF made a number of serious policy mistakes in both design and the implementation of the reforms, which significantly contributed to a delay in stabilisation of the economy and were thus costly in terms of the loss of welfare to the society.

(Jacek Rostowski and Milan Nikolic Abstract Enterprises ...)
Jacek Rostowski and Milan Nikolic Abstract Enterprises in post-communist economies have been subject to a wide range of shocks as the old economic order has been swept away. It has been claimed that among the most important of these shocks have been: elimination of soft budget constraints, foreign trade shocks, and over-devaluation. The paper aims at measuring the size of the shocks affecting the fast reformers of the Visegrad group and some of the slower reforming reference countries (such as Bulgaria, Romania, Russia and Ukraine), and assessong the policy responses of governments.
