Mitchell Craig Begelman was born on March 14, 1953 in New York, United States.
Mitchell received an A.B. and A.M. degree from Harvard University, both in 1974. He also received a Ph.D. degree from Cambridge University in 1978.
Mitchell worked as an assistant professor department astrophysical, planetary and atmospheric science at the University of Colorado, Boulder from 1982 till 1987, an associate professor in 1987-1991, a professor since 1991. He worked as an associate chair at the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1992-1995, and as a chairman from 1995 till 1998.
He has been a fellow of Royal Astronomical Society, Cambridge Philosophical Society, International Astronomical Union, Phi Beta Kappa, a member of American Astronomical Society. He was a fellow of Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics at the University of Colorado, Boulder from 1982 till 1984. He was a research fellow of Alfred P. Sloan Foundation in 1987-1991, a John Simon Guggenheim fellow in 1998-1999.
