Motohisa Shimazu was born in 1343. He was the eldest son of Ujihisa.
Motohisa Shimazu traded with Korea and China and endeavored to enrich his territory. The Ashikaga Shogunate made Motohisa governor of Hiuga and osumi provinces (1404) and additionally governor of Satsuma Province (1409). Motohisa proceeded to Kyoto (1410) to thank Shogun Yoshimochi Ashikaga for the favor and presented him with many gifts.
They included not only Chinese but South Seas products. Evidences indicate that Motohisa trafficked with South Seas areas through wako (Japanese pirates) operating from Satsuma.
