Muriel Branch was born on April 10, 1943 in Montclair, New Jersey, United States, in the family of Frank Adolph and Missouri Walthall Miller.
In 1964 Muriel received Bachelor of Science at Virginia State University, and then she earned Master of Education there in 1978. She also had additional studies at Appalachian State University, Virginia Commonwealth University, James Madison University, and the University of Virginia.
While working as a school librarian at Richmond Public Schools in Richmond, Virginia, United States, for over three decades, Muriel Miller Branch developed the storytelling skills. That is why since 1998 she devoted her life fully to writing. Before that, Muriel also took positions of secretary, vice president, and president at Maggie L. Walker Historical Foundation, and worked as a member of Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation.

In 1974 Muriel married Willis L. Branch Sr., with whom she gave birth to five children, Willis Jr., Kenneth, Chery A., Margaret Lewis, and Sonja Evette.
