Polakoff left New York University in 1971 and became a leading professor and dean of the School of Management at the State University of New York at Binghamton. In 1977, he started to work as a professor of economics and finance at the University of Maryland. He also worked there as a provost of the university until 1986, when he became dean. He held this post until 1991 and served as a director of international development and conflict management for one year. In 1993, Murray E. Polakoff became professor emeritus.
