Nagashige Niwa was born in Gifu, the son of Nagahide. After succeeding to his father's estate, stayed at Kitanosho (Fukui) in Echizen.

Nagashige Niwa was given the title of Lord of Kaga (Ishikawa Prefecture).Distinguished himself while fighting for Ieyasu Tokugawa at Sekigahara Battle (1600) and Osaka-jin (1614-1615). Later was transferred to Shirakawa in Ou (northern Japan) and came to occupy a position of great importance in the Tokugawa regime (1627).
