He studied at Kingsville High School. Postgraduate studies at New York Post graduate Medical School in 1888 and 1897; in Berlin in 1905; Harvard Post-graduate School of Tropical Medicine in 1914-1915 (Certificate). The degree of the Doctor of Medicine (Western Reserve University 1882).

He arrived in China on 19 October 1889. He worked at Built Hospital Plant.
