Neni Konstantinou Panourgia

Background

Neni Konstantinou Panourgia was born on May 1, 1958 in Athens, Greece. Daughter of Konstantinos and Dimitra (Tsakalou) Panourgia.

Education

Panourgia graduated from the American College of Greece with a Bachelor of Arts in 1981. Then she received from Indiana University, Bloomington her Master of Arts in 1985 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1992. At the same time, Panourgia attended the University of Utah from 1989 to 1990.

Career

Panourgia was a teacher of Greek and anthropology of the Intercultural Action Learning Program in 1981 and 1982. Beginning in 1982, she conducted field work in Greece. She worked as lecturer in Greek and exhibit curator at William Hammond Mathers Museum at the Indiana University, Bloomington between 1983 and 1985, then became an associate instructor in anthropology in 1989. In 1987 she was an exhibit coordinator at the University of Colorado. Later, in 1991 she worked for Columbia University, New York City as lecturer in Greek.

Besides, Panourgia worked at the Museum of Children’s Health, Athens, Greece as coordinator of operations in 1994-1995. She also worked at Princeton University, Princeton, NJ as visiting fellow in Hellenic studies in 1995-1996, later became a teacher of Greek language and literature from 1996 to 1997. Moreover, she lectured at various colleges and universities, including De Paul University, Ohio State University, University of Lund, Harvard University, Selwyn College in Cambridge, and New York University.

Achievements

• She is known for the book "Fragments of Death, Fables of Identity: An Athenian Anthropology". Besides, she received grant for excavations at Isthmia from Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research in 1991 and grant from Greek Ministry of National Health in 1992.
