Nicholas Sergeevich was called up for military service , but after serving a year in the army, he resigned and took up acting: the debut took place on the amateur scene in Voronezh (December 1864). Acting in Voronezh, Kukolevskiy interpreted various roles: Bobchinsky ("The Revisor" by N. Gogol), Vanya ("The Hypochondriac" by Alexey Pisemsky), Podkhalyuzin ("Our people – will get quits" by Aleksandr Ostrovsky) and others.
Later on, he acted in theaters of Moscow, Harkov, Kazan, Saratov, Smolensk, Orenburg, Odessa, Kiev and other Russin cities. He was also an employee at the comic magazines "Alarm Clock", "Fragments", "Spectator", "Iskra", the newspaper "Moskovsky leaf".
Kukolevsky’s poems were often recited on the stage. Also, he wrote the book "The poems by N.Struzhkin", Moscow, 1886. He delivered lectures on dramatic art issues, published works on this topic "Actor's Notes" and others in special editions.
