Nikolai Sergeevich graduated from the Voronezh State University, where he had been studying at the department of natural sciences of the pedagogical faculty (1927).
In 1927-1933, he was the teacher of natural sciences in secondary schools in Yelets. Since 1937, he had been working at the Voronezh State University as an assistant professor of the Department of Plant Morphology, Systematics and Plant Geography. Member of the Great Patriotic War. Since 1945, an assistant professor, head (1957-1983) of the same department, in 1957-1961 he was a pro-rector of Voronezh State University.
