In 1880 Vasiliy Eduardovich graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of St. Petersburg University, where he was left for scientific activity.
In 1881-1884, Vasiliy Eduardovich was an official of the Ministry of Public Education. In 1884-1887 he lived abroad to prepare for a professorship. Since 1894, Vasiliy Eduardovich worked as an editor of "Byzantine temporary" magazine. In 1887-1913, he was an assistant professor at Saint Petersburg University. In 1913-1918, Vasiliy Eduardovich was a professor of the Department of General History of Yuriev University (now University of Tartu). In 1918-1925, he was the rector of Voronezh State University.
Vasiliy Eduardovich took an active participation in the transference of the Russian part of Yurievsky University to Voronezh. In 1920, he became a member of the Committee on the district description of the country of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1925-1926, he was the director of the Museum of Antiquities and Fine Arts of the Voronezh State University, then went to Latvia.
In 1920 he became a member of the Regional Country Description Committee of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
