Alexander Fomin was born March 13, 1887, in Gusyatino, Chemerovetsky district, Khmelnitsky region, Ukraine.
From 1906 to 1911 Alexander Fomin studied at Saint Petersburg University.
Alexander Fomin taught at the universities of Saint Petersburg. He is a compiler of various bibliographic reviews and indexes devoted mainly to Russian writers of the XIX - early XX century. Alexander Fomin showed great interest in the creative heritage of A.V. Koltsov and especially I. S. Nikitin.
Alexander Fomin prepared the complete works of I. S. Nikitin; in order to collect materials about the poet, he came to Voronezh in February 1911 and stayed at Kravtsova-Blummer's. From 1911 till 1917 he corresponded with A.N. Vasiliev.
