In 1923, after graduating from high school, Nikolai entered the Moscow Institute of Words, which he graduated from the verbal department in 1925. In 1926 he was accepted to the second year of the literary department of the ethnological faculty of the 1st Moscow State University and graduated in 1929.
Nikolai Ivanovich worked in Moscow publishing houses, scientific institutions. Without a reasonable basis he was repressed (1934), after exile he worked as a teacher at the Tambov State Pedagogical University (now Tambov State University named after G.R. Derzhavin) (1939-1960). Professor at the philology department in the Moscow state University (since 1962). He was a chairman of the research board on folklore at the department of literature and languages of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
His works have been published since 1929.
