In 1841, Nikolai Nikitich graduated from the Second Kazan Men's Gymnasium and entered the historical and philological faculty of the Kazan University, where he graduated in 1845 with a gold medal. On October 5, 1849, he was elected an adjunct to the Department of philosophy.
On August 28, 1854, Nikolai Nikitich was elected as an extraordinary professor of the Kazan University at the Department of Russian literature. In 1857-1859, he was on an official trip abroad. Soon after his return, due to suspicions of the harmful direction of his readings, on February 23, 1860, by order of the Minister of public education, he was removed from the post of Professor.
In 1860-1861, Nikolai Nikitich worked at the Saint Petersburg public library on his doctoral dissertation on Renaissance philosophy, successfully delivered public lectures, and waited for a decision on his approval for the Department of philosophy at Saint Petersburg University. At that time, he belonged to the secret society Library of Kazan students. However, on January 4, 1861, he was restored as an ordinary professor of Russian literature at Kazan University.
From July 9, 1862, to December 9, 1864, Nikolai Nikitich worked as a dean of the faculty of history and philology. In 1863, he was elected as Vice-Chancellor of the university. Since 1875 - honored professor. On May 27, 1875, he was elected as a dean of the faculty of history and philology. He retired on November 28, 1885.
