1910 graduate St. Petersburg Polytcch Institute.
From 1910 worked at A. A. Baykov's Laboratory, St. Petersburg Polytech Institute. 1913-1928 head, Metallographic Laboratory, Putilov Plant, St. Petersburg. 1928-1933 worked at Leningrad Institute of Metals.
Simultaneously lectured at Leningrad Polytech Institute. From 1930 professor at above Institute. From 1939 exec associate, Institute of Metallurgy, USSR Academy of Sciences.
From 1943 simultaneously professor and head, Chair of Thermal Treatment, Moscow Steel Institute. Helped design thermal-treatment shops at various machine-building plants. Did research on phenomena occuring in metals during their crystallization, processing and use.
Developed a theory of the genesis of tetragonal iron lattices, a theory of deformation in crystal bodies and a theory of physical changes in steel during cooling. Developed a method of applying X-ray analysis to the study of tempered steel. Suggested a new hypothesis on ferrocarbon alloys.
