1906-1919 lecturer, from 1919 professor, Kiev University. 1920-1949 also worked at Institute of Botany, Ukraine Academy of Sciences. Did research on plant physiology, anatomy and ecology, microbiology and pedology.
Postulated phytohormonal theory of tropism to explain the growth movements of plants. Studied the morphology and physiology of iron bacteria. Also studied the vegetative reproduction of the houseleek Sempervivum soboliferum, the pollination of sage, the escape of caryopsides from Gramineae during long periods of rain, et cetera
Spent latter years studying soil gases and their biological significance. Speculated on the origin of life on Earth.
