Twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR
Nikolay Rukavishnikov was born on September 18, 1932 in the city of Tomsk, the RSFSR (now Tomsk, Russian Federation).
Rukavishnikov studied at the Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute and after graduation worked for Sergey Korolev's design bureau. He was selected for cosmonaut training in 1967.
He was the participant of the world's first docking of spacecraft with an orbital station (Soyuz-10, Salyut, 1971), carried out the world's first emergency landing of a spacecraft using a backup engine (Soyuz-33, 1979).
1 flight - April 23 - 25, 1971 as a test engineer of the Soyuz-10 spacecraft (together with V. Shatalov and A. Eliseev). The world's first docking with the orbital station (Salyut) was performed. However, due to the failure of the docking unit of the ship, it was not possible to complete the tightening and ensure the tightness of the joint. The transition to the OS Salyut was canceled and the flight was prematurely interrupted. Flight duration: 1 day. 23 hours 45 min. 54 seconds Callsign: "Granite-3".
2 flight - 2 - 8 December 1974 as a flight engineer of the Soyuz-16 spacecraft (commander - Anatoly Filipchenko) under the ASTP program. During the flight, a new modification of the 7K-TM ship in the mode under the ASTP program.
Flight duration: 5 days. 22 hours. 23 min. 35 seconds Callsign: "Buran-2".
3 flight - 10 - 12 April 1979 as commander of the Soyuz-33 spacecraft (together with the astronaut of Bulgaria
G. Ivanov) under the program of the 5th expedition visiting the OS "Salyut-6". The docking did not take place because of the accident of the main engine of the ship. Emergency landing on a ballistic trajectory with use of the reserve engine is executed. Flight duration: 1 day. 23 hours 01 min. 06 seconds Callsign: "Saturn-1".
