1870 graduate 2nd Konstantin Military College. 1881 graduate General Staff Academy.
Fought in 1877-1878 Russo-Turkish War. During 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War was for a time chief of Field Staff, 2nd Manchurian Army, 1906-1909 commanded corps, then engaged in drafting military regulations. 1912 drafted Field Regulations.
At start of World War 1 commanded 3rd Army. September 1914—March 1915 commanded Northwestern Front. Relieved of command on medical grounds and appointed member, State Council.
From July 1915 commanded 6th Army. August 1915—April 1917 (with a break from December 1915 to August 1916 on medical grounds) commanded Northern Front. February 1917 advocated abdication of Nicholas World War II
From April 1917 on pension. Underwent medical treatment in Kislovodsk. September 1918 among hostages taken by Caucasian Red Army.
