Nikolay Severniy graduated from the Kharkov Theological Seminary (1858), studied at Moscow Theological Academy (1858-1860), graduated from the historical-philological Faculty of Kharkov University (1864).
Nikolay Severniy was a history teacher of Voronezh provincial gymnasium (1864-1869). By order of the Ministry of education was sent to Moscow to search the archives and libraries of manuscripts of Yu. Krizhanich. He served in the Moscow archive of the Ministry of Justice (1869-1875). He was a teacher of history and geography of the Orenburg Gymnasium (1875-1882), Tula Real School (1882- 1910).
Nikolay Severniy was engaged in historiography of the Tula local history, toponymy. A significant part of the study of local lore North unpublished and preserved in the personal fund of the North in State Archives of the Tula Region. Author of books: "Report on classes at the capital's libraries and archives in vaccination time" (Moscow, 1867), "An episode from primitive history of Ural region"(Orenburg, 1877), "State and public system in England, France, Germany and the North American United States" (Saint Petersburg, 1905) and others.
