Background
Nobuzane Fujiwara was born in 1177 and was the son of Fujiwara Takanobu.

His poems are included in anthologies compiled at Imperial orders. His book Ima Monogatarit is a discourse on waka composition. As a pairtter, he painted in the tradition of his father and was skilled in portrait painting of the Yamato School. One of his famous works is that of Emperor Gotoba starting for Oki Island in exile. Nearly all his works are now gone. Still extant are his portrayal of Emperor Gotoba and a picture scroll of Murasaki-Shikibu’s diary.
He became a priest in his late years, assuming the Buddhist name of Jakusei.
