Takanobu was born in Kyoto, the son of Tamekata, he was the eldest brother of Sadaie, the great poet, though his father was different.

He was appointed Lord of Echizen (Fukui Prefecture) and then Wakasa (Fukui Prefecture). In his late years, he became a disciple of Saint Honen and became a priest with the name of Kaishin. Painted a picture of an Imperial procession on a screen at the Saishoko-in Temple, jointly with Painter Mitsunaga Fujiwara. Takanobu, who was good at portraiture, painted the human figures in that picture. He made a portrait of Saint Honen at the request of Emperor Goshirakawa. The Yamato School of painting prospered thanks largely to him. As a waka poet, he was no less great. His odes are included in the famous anthologies, Senzai-wakashiij Shin Kokin-wakashu, etc.
