Norman Allison Calkins was born on September 9, 1822 in Gainesville, New York, United States; descended from a Plymouth settler of 1640, was the son of Elisha Deming Calkins and Abigail (Lockwood) Calkins, pioneer settlers of Gainesville, New York. The family had moved to this community from Connecticut with that general westward expansion of New England population which occurred in the first part of the nineteenth century.
The New England school tradition seems to have been carried to Gainesville, for young Calkins not only attended the common schools of the district but also spent several terms at a classical academy.
At the early age of eighteen he began teaching during the winter terms in Castile, New York, returning to his own studies during the summer and vacation terms. Later he went back to Gainesville where he became principal of the Central School. He was elected county superintendent during the school year 1845-46 but resigned the position in the fall of the latter year to go to New York City to become editor of the Student. The monthly issues of this magazine were intended not only as a family miscellany but also as a school reader, for Calkins had a conviction that reading in the schools could be much improved by the frequent introduction of fresh reading matter. The magazine was well received and provided him with an income. So successful did the Student prove that it encouraged competition in a similar publication called the Schoolmate with which it later consolidated under the title of Student and Schoolmate. At this juncture, however, Calkins vacated the editorial chair, as he was getting ready for the publication of his most outstanding book. He had studied Robert Owen's experiment at New Harmony, Indiana, and thus early became acquainted with Pestalozzian principles of object teaching. These he set forth in 1861 in a volume entitled Primary Object Lessons for a Graduated Course of Development which ultimately went through at least forty editions and was translated into several foreign languages. Distinction quickly followed in his election as assistant superintendent of schools in New York City in charge of the primary grades. Reelection followed reelection to this post to the year of his death. He further popularized the new educational theory and greatly added to his prestige as lecturer in the methods and principles of education at the Saturday classes held for teachers in New York City for approximately twenty years. Further books followed from his pen, all based on Pestalozzian principles: Teaching Color (1877); Manual of Object-Teaching (1882); First Reading, from Blackboard to Books (1883); How to Teach Phonics (1889). He served the National Education Association as president of the department of elementary schools, as president of the department of superintendents, as treasurer, and finally in 1886 as president.
