Education

Dr. Norman Michael Goecke earned his Ph.D. in Musicology with a specialization in Ethnomusicology from The Ohio State University in 2016, graduating summa cum laude. His dissertation, “What Is at Stake in Jazz Education? Creative Black Music and the Twenty-First-Century Learning Environment,” was directed by Dr. Graeme Boone. He also completed a Master of Arts in African American and African Studies with a focus on Diaspora Studies at Ohio State in 2014, summa cum laude, under the supervision of Dr. William T. McDaniel, with a thesis titled “What is ‘Jazz Theory’ Today? Its Cultural Dynamics and Conceptualization.” Prior to this, he received a Master of Music in Jazz Studies, summa cum laude, in 2006, and a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Trombone Performance, cum laude, in 2005, both from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Career

Dr. Norman Michael Goecke has served as Adjunct Professor of Music and African American Studies at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Ohio, since 2006. From 2008 to 2013 he worked as a Graduate Research and Teaching Associate in the Department of Music at The Ohio State University, assisting with research and teaching courses in jazz, African American music, world music, and popular music. He later returned as Lecturer in the Department of Music at Ohio State from 2017 to 2018, where he taught Introduction to Jazz. In addition, he has maintained a private teaching practice as a trombone instructor at Spira’s Studio in Cincinnati since 2002. Alongside his academic career, Goecke has been active as a performer and ensemble leader. He co-founded and continues to co-lead the Breathairean Ensemble, a Cincinnati-based jazz group formed in 2004. As a performing artist, he has appeared as trombonist and percussionist with Rolando Matías and the Afro-Rican Ensemble since 2005, with the funk-jazz group Fo/Mo/Deep beginning in 2009, and with Foley’s Funk Experience, led by Miles Davis’s former bassist Foley McCreary, since 2008.
