Murdoch received his Bachelor in History and Political Science from Asbury College in 1961. Then he obtained his Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1965 and his Master of Theology in 1972. Later he got from the University of Cincinnati a Master of Education in 1968, a Master of Arts in 1975 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1985.
Murdoch worked as a professor of history at the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio since 1968. From 1986 to 1992 he was chairperson of the Milford Area Bicentennial Commission.
Murdoch has been a member of the Organization of American Historians, Association of Third World Studies, Oral History Association, American Society of Church History, American Association of University Professors, Milford Historical Society (president, 1990), Wesleyan Theological Society, Fides et Historia.
He married Grace Bell on September 17, 1966. The couple has 3 children: W. Randall Murdoch Nidalmia, Amy Ruth, D. Ryan.
