Background

Shiren was born on February 7, 1925 in New York City, New York, United States; the son of Samuel and Clare (Cinader) Shiren.

Education

Shiren received a Bachelor of Science degree from Tufts University in 1945. Eleven years later he was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Stanford University.

Career

Shiren began his career as a research associate at Stanford University in 1947. Four years later he took a position of a staff member at Hudson Laboratory of Columbia University. Then in 1955, Norman became a staff member at General Electric Research Center. Also he held the same position at IBM Corporation: Yorktown Research from 1961 to 1987. In 1987, Shiren was appointed a consultant at the same corporation, where he worked until 1990.

Achievements

• Shiren invented the ultrasonic electron spin resonance and developed the explanation of Kapitza conductance at rough surfaces.

Membership

Shiren is a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science and American Physical Society.
