He graduated from the Foreign Trade Institute of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Trade in 1949.
He worked as a consultant of the Ministry of Foreign Trade of the USSR, in the CMEA Secretariat, in the apparatus of the CPSU Central Committee (1962-1969). He was a professor at Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, in charge of the department of economic geography of foreign socialist countries (1967-1977). From 1969 to 1998 he was a director of the Institute for International Economic and Political Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (until 1991 - Institute of the World Economy of the USSR Academy of Sciences), then he was his honorary director. He was a member of the founding council of the newspaper "Moscow News".
In recent years he has been the Head of the Department of World Economy at the Institute of New Economics, an honorary director of the Institute of International Economic and Political Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, an Adviser of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
He was a people's deputy of the USSR (1989-1991) and a deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation (1993-1995), he worked in the State Duma as a deputy chairman of the International Affairs Committee, a chairman of the economic committee of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
