Oleg Yurievich At'kov was born on the 9th of May, 1949 in the village Khvorostyanka, Kuibyshev (now Samara) Oblast, Russia.

In 1996 he graduated from secondary school №10 in Kherson, Ukrainian SSR (now Ukraine). Then he studied one year at Kherson Medical School. In 1973 he graduated from I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University. In 1975 he passed in-patient residence, in 1978 he went down from the post-graduate course in the Research Institute of Cardiology of All-Union Cardiology Research Center of the USSR AMS.
Oleg At’kov started her career as an anatomist in the medical unit at Kherson Cotton Factory.
Since 1973 he stayed in the Research Institute of Cardiology of All-Union Cardiology Research Center of the USSR AMS, first as a clinical resident, then since October 1975 - postgraduate student, since 1982 he became a junior research fellow, four years later he became senior research fellow. Since 1984 he headed the department of new research and diagnostics methods.
In March 1983 he was selected for space flight as a physician cosmonaut. Then from October 1983 to January 1984 he was trained as a physician-researchers cosmonaut of a main crew in a team of cosmonauts under the program of flight on long-term orbital station «Salyut-7» together with L. Kizim and V. Solovyov.
Since 1991 he was appointed the Head of the department of instrumental diagnostics methods at Russian State Medical University.
From 1989 to 1996 he was Co-Director of the Space life Sciences Department at ISU in Strasbourg.
He has more than 100 scientific papers, he is an author of 14 inventions, 3 patents, 4 monographs.
He is married, and has a daughter.
