Several appearances with Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe abroad. Distinguishing traits: lightness and control of line. Especially dramatic in the role of Giselle.
One of the last ballerinas of the romantic tradition and first of the expressionist school. Emigrated. With the Paris Opera, 1924-1932. Appeared in ballets by M. Fokin (e.g.
The Fire Bird) After leaving the Paris Opera, appeared with various companies in Australia and Argentina. In the USA from 1939.

Known for his pastoral and welfare work. Wrote on religious subjects. Very popular in Kiev, especially among the poor.
When he died, his coffin was carried to the cemetery by the city’s beggars, for whom he had been the spiritual father for decades.
